For this week's lab, we were tasked with creating a Land Use Land Cover (LULC) map. A USGS aerial photo of Pascagoula was provided and used to create this map. To begin, I chose to identify the larger portions of the
map first based on patterns I recognized. Residential areas appeared to cover the map the
most. I looked for commercial and industrial buildings that looked different from
the residential pattern. I identified commercial parcels that had larger buildings, parking lots, and were
on larger lots of land. I started with the largest location classes and worked
down to the smallest. I finished with identifying the wetland classes and bodies of water.
Once all of the land use and land cover classes were identified on the aerial image, I double-checked my map for accuracy. I set 30 random truthing points and cross-referenced each point in Google Maps using the street view. Each incorrect point is marked with a red dot. I identified a total of five incorrect points on my map. I calculated the overall accuracy of the truthing points (correct number of points/total points). This accuracy total is displayed in the top right-hand corner of the map.
